We now have a beautiful ancient stone-built holiday home to rent in the listed Roman village of Pont-de-Barret!

From August 2018, the owners of ‘Les Beaux Chenes’ gites are delighted to present our latest gite, ‘Les Hirondelles’, a beautiful, ancient Drome-Provencale stone-built house in the centre of the old village, beside the river Roubion.

Les Hirondelles’, which means ‘The Swallows’, can sleep 2 to 6 people and is a dream holiday home for a romantic couples getaway, a fun family holiday or an excellent base for small groups and friends to explore.

The vacation house has 3 spacious bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a glorious private sun terrace, with wonderful views of the Roman church and village, ideal for lounging in the sun, enjoying breakfast croissants and relaxing with evening drinks, watching the swallows at sunset or the fantastic starry night skies.

The home is built over several levels, which means incredible views of the Roman rooftops, the historic village, the Roman church, the rare Roman bridge and the sunbathed countryside of La Drôme-Provencale.

We fell in love with the views and the history of the building, which originally belonged to the Château up the road and then later housed factory workers for the local silk trade. We originally bought the house as a holiday home in 2008 but loved it and Pont de Barret so much that we moved here full time, from England, in 2014. We then bought and set up small gite business ‘Les Beaux Chenes’.

The 3 bedrooms are spread across a number of levels of the house, providing privacy and space for everyone. Kids will love the large, airy attic bedroom at the top of the house. While parents will enjoy the relaxation of the bedroom and en-suite bathroom on the lower level with access out to the river. The holiday home also has a fabulous fully equipped kitchen and lounge with a wood burner, as well as a mezzanine where you can catch up on work or relax and enjoy the views from the terrace.

‘Les Hirondelles’ is in a wonderful tranquil street right in the middle of ‘Le Vieux Village’, the oldest part of Pont-de-Barret, a listed Roman village.

The streets of the village are narrow and winding, filled with charm, history and romance, so you can wander happily admiring the Roman and French architecture. The village has a delicious Boulangerie, 3 great restaurants, a friendly bar that says open late and a fascinating wine cave. Within a few minutes, you can wander down to the Roman bridge overlooking the church to admire the surrounding mountains and watch the swallows and swifts swooping over the river Roubion.

With ‘Les Hirondelles’ as your holiday base, you can be as active or as relaxed as you like. And Pont-de-Barret is the perfect spot from which to discover one of the most undiscovered, beautiful and varied parts of South East France – La Drôme. This region has it all!

Looking for an adventurous holiday full of activities?

Ideally located between Le Vercors, the Luberon, Mont Ventoux and Provence. While staying at ‘Les Hirondelles’ you can go swimming in the river (better than any private pool!), follow challenging linked cycling routes or just meander to enjoy nearby villages and towns, go running or hiking through lavender fields and the nearby mountains. Pont de Barret is also an excellent base for rock climbers.

Or are you dreaming of a relaxing holiday surrounded by the beauty of the South of France?

Then we recommend nature walks around Pont-de-Barret to spot golden eagles, owls, wild boar and deer. The area is perfect for walks and picnics along the Roubion river through sunflower fields and vineyards. In the village, you can take a local art or pottery class, buy fresh pain au chocolat every morning and visit Château Saint-Férreol and the Roman church. Take a day trip out to explore the lovely towns of Montélimar, Crest and Dieulefit, each just 25 minutes away. Then return to sunbathe on your private terrace with a glass of wine and some  local picodon cheese or ‘nougat de Montélimar’!

Foodies, did you know that La Drome is the largest organic producer in France?

And because of its incredible location between the Vercors and Mont Ventoux, you can sample a huge range of wines from across the Côte du Rhône. Not to mention, for history buffs, there are Roman villages and historic sites dotted all around the Drome. To the North, there are the historic cities of Valence (with the nearest TGV station) and Lyon; to the South, the cities of Orange, Nimes, Avignon and Marseille, are all within easy reach by car or train.

The holiday home is just 4 kms away from our gîtes, ‘Les Beaux Chenes’. So we are on hand to offer advice, donkey walks, a drive to explore the local area in our 2CV, share an apéro or to leave you to enjoy the peace and explore on your own!
